SofTouch Abortion Procedure

Abortion is an invasive procedure that can result in very real side effects, both physical and
emotional. One method currently being advertised is a procedure called SofTouch.
According to its website, the provider claims “SofTouch® is over 99% effective in bringing
about a natural abortion, that’s higher than the 96-98% effectiveness rate of the Abortion Pill.”
However, abortion is NOT natural. The advertisers compare the procedure to a PAP smear and
the results to a miscarriage. During the procedure, a doctor will insert a tube through the vagina
and cervix (which is not naturally open) and uses vacuum pressure that will result in an abortion.
The company claims that this pressure simply releases a late period and that it’s a natural
release.

SofTouch is specifically for early stage pregnancies and is marketed as being a safe and natural
way to terminate a pregnancy.

The technical term for SofTouch is Manual Vacuum Aspiration. During the procedure, you will
be in the same position as you would be for a pelvic exam. A speculum will be placed into your
vagina, then a small tube will be placed through the vagina and dilated cervix. The cervix is
usually dilated with a mechanical dilator. A syringe is attached to the tube by which the
physician suctions the embryo from the uterus thru the tube into the syringe. There will be
cramping associated with the procedure, and women have also reported feeling nauseous and
faint. The website claims that women will feel several minutes of intense cramping during the
procedure.

Medical Dictionary defines vacuum aspiration as:
a method of removing tissues from the uterus by suction for diagnostic purposes or to
remove elements of conception. With the patient under local or light general anesthesia,
the cervix is dilated, and the uterus is emptied with suction. Postoperative care includes
the close observation of vital signs for symptoms of blood loss. Also called suction
curettage. Compare dilation and curettage. See also elective abortion, therapeutic
abortion.

Web MD explains vacuum aspirations as this:
Vacuum aspiration is a minor surgical procedure. A normal recovery includes:
 Irregular bleeding or spotting for the first 2 weeks. During the first week, avoid tampons and
use only pads.
 Cramps similar to menstrual cramps. These may be present for several hours and possibly
for a few days, as the uterus shrinks back to its nonpregnant size.
 Emotional reactions for 2 to 3 weeks. After an abortion, it is normal to feel relief, sadness,
grief or guilt. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can make emotions stronger than usual.
However, it is possible that this procedure will not remove the embryo in its entirety, which can
result in serious side effects for the woman, including the need for surgical intervention.
Potentially dangerous side effects can include uterine or cervical perforation, pelvic infection
and excess bleeding.
